Description: (Sunset Zone 1-24,28-43, USDA Zone 3 to 9). Classic "mall bonsai" lends itself very well to cascade training or trunk can be wired and brought up for an informal upright style. Dense blue-green foliage spreads rapidly.
Basic Care: Grows best in full sun to semi-shade. Protect from full exposure in hot climates. Loves coastal environment and humidity. Pruning is typically done in spring and summer. When new growth reaches about one inch in length pinch back by half using thumb and fingers by giving a slight tug. Repeat as necessary until mid-September.
Feeding: Fertilize just before and during growing season until autumn. Many brands of fertilizer are available and it is beneficial to use a variety of these. Follow all package instructions.
Repotting: Repotting is best done in early Spring and usually after two to three years of being in the same pot. Correct root pruning is very important and cannot be addressed in a line or two. Please refer to your favorite bonsai book or local bonsai experts. These junipers, in our experience, do not like to stay root bound for any length of time.
