Description : (Sunset Zone A3,2-10,12,14-24,31-41, USDA Zone 5). Fast growing deciduous tree. Certainly a classic tree for bonsai culture. Its deeply refined character creates an easy effect of size. Small leafed tree is good as single tree or used in groves. Spring growth is light green turning dark green in summer. Leaf color turns red, yellow and orange in fall. We prune our maples several times during the growing season to develop many branches.
Basic Care : Grows best in light shade. Never allow root ball to dry out completely. Protect tree from direct hot summer sun and winter freezes.
Feeding : Fertilize just before and during growing season until autumn. Many brands of fertilizer are available and it is beneficial to use a variety of these. Follow all package instructions.
Repotting : Prune roots yearly or at least every other year. Older specimens every two to three years. Repot before leaves appear in early spring is best or after leaves fall in autumn. Correct root pruning is very important and cannot be addressed in a line or two. Please refer to your favorite bonsai book or local bonsai experts.
