Description : (Sunset Zone 3-24,26-34,39, USDA Zone 4). Rare, very slow growing broadleaf evergreen. Very dwarf. Grows 1/2" to 1" per year. Bright green tiny leaves and white contrasting bark make this a perfect little bonsai. Very little maintenance.
Basic Care : Grows best in semi-shade. Check water on a regular basis. Thinning on this small boxwood can be done anytime during spring and summer. Open up the inside of tree by removing a few small branches in the tightest of branch clusters. Pruning is typically done in spring and summer. When new growth reaches about one half inch long pinch back by half. Repeat as necessary until mid-September. Protect from below freezing temperatures.
Feeding : We like to recommend any balanced liquid fertilizer. A common fertilizer analysis would be 10-15-10. Any liquid fertilizer will work though. Feed liquid food at normal rate with every watering when new growth begins in Spring until about Oct. 1st.
Repotting : Repotting is best done in early Spring and usually after two to three years of being in the same pot. Correct root pruning is very important and cannot be addressed in a line or two. Please refer to your favorite bonsai book or local bonsai experts. Place newly planted plant in a shaded area for approximately 3-4 weeks. Reintroduce plant gradually into desired light. Check water regularly but do not allow plant to remain soggy. After repotting its better to keep the soil on the dry side instead of the wet side. After one month start feeding with liquid food.
